“Canyons of New Mexico”

These oil paintings represent one year’s work, some done in the canyons of New Mexico.  They are

intended to evoke the fragile beauty of sandstone and the mystery of its texture.  They are impressions of the undulating, colorful surface of the wind-eroded and water textures ( i.e., the petrolyphs of Native Americans) and natural textures and forms.  As with the gradually disappearing petroglyphs, the figurative imagery in these paintings is partially

hidden.  The obscuring of imagery is also a metaphor for the unknown meanings of most rock art.
